Inhale, Exhale

Instrumentation: solo flute

Duration: 6 minutes

Inhale, Exhale is inspired by the relationship of breathing to an anxious state of being. While a relaxed person may breathe normally, someone struggling to remain calm and in control of their emotions will likely be breathing deeply, and someone having an anxiety attack will breathe heavily as they experience the terrifying loss of control over their body. This work explores the emotional and physical struggle of stress, anxiety, panic, and self-control in life.

This work was written for Subin Cho, a flutist at the Peabody Conservatory, who premiered the composition in November of 2022. I’m grateful for the guidance of my professor Michael Hersch, and Marina Piccinini, who helped to facilitate this fruitful collaboration.
