Tableaux

Instrumentation: percussion duo (snare drum, singing bowl, 3 toms, kick drum, triangle, lighting)

Duration: 12 minutes

My goal with Tableaux was to compose a piece that contrasts heavily with some of the percussion music I’ve been exposed to. I wanted to create something beautiful, patient, spacious–something that draws the audience in, tactfully moving them and surprising them. The element of light in this piece is new to me, as is the use of miniature-esque movements–these elements form a collection of audio-visual tableaux–distinct, yet similar in various ways. I’m so grateful for the chance to work with the amazing musicians in And2 Percussion (James Taylor and Abby Foehrkolb) and VIRID Duo (Ancel Fitzgerald Neeley and Olivia Cirisan), who this piece is written for and dedicated to.
