The Embers in my Heart are Stoked

Instrumentation: solo piano

Duration: 6 minutes

Composed for Julia Blackwood in 2022, The Embers in my Heart are Stoked is a work about passion. The internal fire inside us dies down from time to time, but things such as love for a person, a form of art, or the beauty of life itself can stoke the smoldering embers in our heart and bring the flames to life once again. The music is full of complex emotions that I associate with passion, and should be played with a certain poignancy and bittersweetness throughout.

The piece was premiered by pianist Myroslav Mykhailenko at the Peabody Conservatory in May, 2023.
