The Other Shore Across
Instrumentation: baritone voice, trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet
Duration: 4 minutes
The Other Shore Across was written in 2023 for loadbang (Andy Kozar, Tyler Bouque, Adrian Sandi, and William Lang) and was premiered as part of Divergent Studio at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA
The text is a mixture of fragments of Dante’s “Inferno” and original writing:
I come to take you to the other shore across
Into eternal darkness, there to dwell
Through me you pass into eternal pain
Here, sighs of lamentations and loud moans resound through the air pierced by no star
Suffer the wretched souls of those who lived without praise or blame
Who for themselves were only
Past pale stone steps I ferry us now as my friends march downwards, glued to their cellphones still
These wretches, their shrieks are heard
These wretches…
If aught they merited, it matters not
I told them not of Elysium
Now not man, man once I was
Take you to the other shore across
